About PGH Fly Co

In January of 2023, Kurt Shaffer started PGH Fly Co. Kurt has been a lifelong fisherman, catching his first trout at age four, and steelhead at age five. All throughout Kurt’s life, fishing has always been a consistent hobby. As a young child, he would look at fishing lures and dream of making them some day. In 2007 while on a trip to Alaska, Kurt fly fished for the first time for grayling to use as bait for lake trout. Kurt wouldn’t pick up a fly rod for another few years until a chance encounter with a fishing guide at his camp peaked his interest. Not long after learning to fish, he started looking at the flies he was buying and thought he could start to make them. For years, he tied classic patterns, but always played with making his own patterns as well. In 2017, he got introduced to the Lively Legz product, and it opened up a whole new world of possibilities. He started developing what is now the PGH Black Stoner and quite a few other patterns. In the winter of 2023, during his slow time of the year, he decided to start PGH Fly Co! He started selling classic patterns, but quickly saw that people took a big interest in his signature patterns and variants. Kurt is adamant on using quality materials, often sourcing from local companies to offer the best flies money can buy. PGH Fly Co has been named tyer of the month in apps, has had interviews with magazines, and have plenty of great reviews that you can read. Kurt thrives on creativity and is constantly trying to create something new!
